Eiffel Tower closed by strike after female staff replaced for Hindu group visit

The incident occurred on Saturday when a delegation of approximately one hundred individuals from the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, more commonly known as BAPS, visited the Eiffel Tower. BAPS is a spiritual, volunteer-driven organization rooted in the Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism, with its origins tracing back to the eighteenth century. A core tenet of their beliefs involves strict separation between men and women in various aspects of life, including religious activities, seating arrangements during gatherings, and even designated entrances to their places of worship.

Reports from multiple sources indicate that, in an effort to accommodate the BAPS group's customs, women working at the Eiffel Tower were allegedly asked to vacate their positions or move to areas out of sight for the duration of the visit. A staff union representative, Diane Davoine, articulated the deep sense of humiliation experienced by the female employees who were subjected to this request, highlighting the discriminatory nature of such an instruction within a workplace. In direct response to what they perceived as an unacceptable demand and a disregard for their dignity, workers initiated a strike, which resulted in the Eiffel Tower being closed to the public on Monday, disrupting thousands of visitors' plans.

Ariel Weil, the president of the company responsible for managing the Eiffel Tower, Société d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), addressed the situation publicly. He attributed the unfortunate turn of events to managers being "a bit overzealous" in their attempt to fulfill the visiting group's specific cultural and religious requirements, suggesting a lapse in judgment and a failure to adequately consider the implications for their staff.
