Japan has carried out the execution of Sunao Takami, a fifty-eight-year-old man convicted of murder, marking the first execution in the nation in over a year. Takami was put to death for a horrific crime committed in 2009, where he set a fire that tragically killed five people in a gaming parlor.
The incident that led to Takami's conviction involved him dousing a pachinko parlor with gasoline before igniting it. This devastating act, which took place near his residence in Osaka, resulted in the immediate deaths of four customers and one employee. The severity of the crime and the loss of life led to a swift legal process. In 2011, a jury composed of six members, alongside a three-judge panel, delivered a death sentence to Takami, specifying hanging as the method of execution. Throughout his trial, Takami's defense team contended that he was suffering from a mental illness at the time of the crime, arguing for a lesser sentence. However, the court ultimately rejected this argument, finding him fully culpable for his actions.
Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi affirmed that the execution order was issued only after extensive and meticulous deliberation, underscoring the gravity of the decision. This execution is notable as it is the first to be carried out under the current Takaichi administration, potentially signaling its stance on capital punishment.
Japan remains one of only two Group of Seven (G7) nations that continue to practice capital punishment, with the United States being the other. This position often draws international scrutiny and debate regarding human rights and judicial practices. A characteristic of Japan's death penalty system is the extremely short notice given to inmates; individuals on death row are typically informed of their impending execution just a few hours before it is carried out. The previous execution in Japan occurred in June of last year, involving Takahiro Shiraishi, infamously known as the "Twitter killer," who was convicted for the murders and dismemberment of multiple victims.
