National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Chris Williams returned to Earth on Sunday after an eight-month science mission. He traveled with Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev. Their Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft landed safely by parachute southeast of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.
The crew launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on November 27, 2025. They spent 241 days in space. During this time, they completed 3,856 orbits of Earth. They traveled more than 102 million miles.
Williams contributed to many scientific studies and technology demonstrations. His work included research for new cancer treatments. He also investigated methods to improve material production in space. These materials could be used in high-performance computers and electronics.
Williams conducted two spacewalks. One prepared the station for electrical power system upgrades. The other involved replacing a faulty joint on the Canadarm2 robotic arm. This research and maintenance work benefits people on Earth. It also helps NASA prepare for future human exploration of the Moon and Mars.
This mission marked the first space flight for Williams and Mikaev. It was Kud-Sverchkov's second journey into space. After medical evaluations, the crew will travel to Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Williams will then fly to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Astronauts and cosmonauts have continuously lived and worked aboard the ISS for over 25 years. The station allows for experiments and scientific breakthroughs not possible on Earth. This research helps NASA understand human spaceflight demands and develop solutions for extended missions. It also creates new commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit. The ISS provides a foundation for future journeys to the Moon through the Artemis program and future human missions to Mars.
