Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has identified artificial intelligence (AI) as a primary driver for its future growth. The company projects a multi-trillion-dollar market opportunity for AI.
SpaceX's financial disclosures, released ahead of an anticipated initial public offering (IPO), describe its traditional space launch and satellite operations as supportive of its AI business. This strategy follows SpaceX's acquisition of xAI earlier this year. The newly formed SpaceXAI division now manages the Grok AI models and chatbot, which were previously developed by xAI.
The S-1 filing from SpaceX claims the company has "the largest actionable total addressable market in human history." It emphasizes AI as the majority of this opportunity, estimating a $26.5 trillion market. This figure approaches the United States' nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was nearly $32 trillion in the first quarter of 2026.
The timeframe for SpaceX's market estimate is not specified. However, this projection significantly exceeds third-party forecasts for the global AI market. For example, Gartner estimated global AI spending would reach $3.3 trillion by 2027. Citigroup suggested the global AI market might surpass $4.2 trillion by 2030.
SpaceX faces competition from established AI companies. Elon Musk, before the xAI merger, described xAI as "the smallest of the AI companies." This statement was made during court proceedings related to his lawsuit against OpenAI, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The Grok AI chatbot has shown lower user adoption compared to other AI services. A survey by AppMagic of 260,000 United States consumers and workers found that 0.174 percent paid for Grok in the second quarter of 2026. In contrast, over six percent of respondents paid for OpenAI's ChatGPT.
