Tesla Cybercab Under Federal Investigation After Deployment

Tesla's Cybercab, a two-seater vehicle without a steering wheel or brake pedals, is under investigation by the United States federal government. The investigation began shortly after Tesla deployed the Cybercabs for public use in Texas and Florida. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is examining whether the vehicle meets federal safety standards.

Tesla plans to integrate these vehicles into its Robotaxi ride-hail network. The company stated that its Cybercabs comply with all existing safety standards, thus negating the need for an exemption. Other companies with unusually shaped robotaxis, such as Amazon subsidiary Zoox, have applied for and received exemptions from federal rules.

The NHTSA's investigation, termed an Audit Query, will scrutinize the data and processes Tesla used to determine the Cybercab's compliance. Jonathan Morrison, NHTSA Administrator, affirmed the agency's support for automated vehicles but emphasized the need for adherence to federal laws. An former acting NHTSA administrator, Ann Carlson, suggested the investigation indicates the agency's frustration with Tesla's approach.

Federal investigations can lead to significant consequences. The NHTSA can mandate changes to a vehicle or its manufacturing process. The agency can also impose enforcement actions, including civil penalties. For example, Volvo Group North America paid $130 million in penalties in 2023 following an investigation into its recall procedures.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the company aims to be recognized as a robotics and autonomous vehicle company. While 45 Cybercabs are currently operating in Texas, Tesla intends to deploy millions of these vehicles annually. The Cybercab represents a key component of Tesla's future strategy.
