Two killed in Greece firefighting helicopter collision battling wildfires

Two individuals tragically lost their lives following a mid-air collision involving two firefighting helicopters in Greece. The devastating incident unfolded as the aircraft were actively engaged in combating persistent wildfires that have been ravaging parts of the region.

The collision occurred approximately 65 kilometers west of the capital, Athens, in an area already under immense pressure from the spreading blazes. Both helicopters involved were identified as Bell aircraft, specifically a Bell 205 and a Bell 212, which were reportedly leased from an Australian company to bolster Greece's aerial firefighting capabilities. They were critical assets in the ongoing efforts to extinguish a particularly large and aggressive wildfire burning near the Attica-Boeotia border, a region frequently susceptible to such infernos during the dry season.

Eyewitness accounts and video footage captured the harrowing moment one helicopter's main rotor blades struck the tail rotor of the other in mid-air. The impact was catastrophic. One aircraft, engulfed in flames, spiraled out of control and crashed into a rugged ravine, a testament to the brutal forces at play. Miraculously, the second helicopter, despite sustaining significant damage, managed to execute an emergency landing, averting an even greater tragedy.

The fatalities included a Danish pilot, a seasoned aviator often contracted for such missions, and a Greek fire service liaison officer, whose role was crucial in coordinating ground and air operations. From the second helicopter, a British pilot and another Greek coordinator survived the collision, albeit shaken and injured. Rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the scene, successfully extracting the surviving crew members. The crew from the crashed helicopter were recovered unconscious from the wreckage and, despite immediate medical attention, were later pronounced dead, a somber end to their heroic efforts.
