Eating one avocado daily may reduce the risk of heart disease in adults with obesity. This reduction is linked to lower levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the blood. Researchers at Penn State found that daily avocado consumption was associated with an estimated four percent decrease in heart disease risk.
LDL particles transport cholesterol throughout the body. High concentrations of these particles can indicate a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. This risk is often more pronounced in individuals with abdominal obesity. The study noted that LDL particle concentration is distinct from LDL cholesterol levels, commonly known as "bad cholesterol."
Smaller LDL particles can more easily penetrate artery walls, contributing to plaque buildup. This plaque narrows blood vessels and reduces their flexibility. This process increases the strain on the cardiovascular system. Stiffened blood vessels may struggle to accommodate increased blood flow during physical activity, heat, or stress. This can lead to a sharper rise in blood pressure, potentially causing cardiac events.
The research analyzed data from 786 participants in the Habitual Diet and Avocado Trial. This six-month study included adults aged 25 and older. Participants with a waist circumference greater than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women were included. Half of the participants continued their usual diets, while the other half received one avocado to eat daily.
Blood samples taken at the beginning and end of the trial showed a decrease in LDL particle concentrations among those who ate daily avocados. This reduction was 49 nanomoles per liter. This change corresponds to the estimated four percent reduction in heart disease risk. The improvement in LDL particle levels was consistent across various demographics, including sex, race, ethnicity, age, and body mass index.
Previous research also indicated that avocado consumption could lower LDL cholesterol and particle levels. However, those studies tightly controlled participants' diets. This latest study demonstrated benefits within real-world dietary patterns. The findings suggest that a single dietary change can contribute to better heart health, even without significant overall dietary modifications or weight loss.
